Fish Fingers and Custard

There is this TV show you may have heard about. It's kind of a big deal around my house. It is called Dr. Who. There is this time traveling debonair hero who swoops in and saves the day just in the nick of time... EVERY TIME! I guess it wouldn't be much of show if he didn't. So it is kinda expected.
Our family likes this hero and his amazing choices in companions. One specific companion was a little girl named Amelia Pond. Red hair, confidant, independent right from the start. Well, in this particular episode Amelia found the Doctor just after he crashes and could use some help. At first she tries to feed him the "normal" food, apple, bacon, beans etc. Nothing seams to be working. And then the Doctor goes to the fridge and pulls out fish fingers and custard.

Amelia doubts his sanity, but prepares the meal anyway expecting this to be rejected like all the others. Well turns out both Amelia and the Doctor love the dish! They continue getting to know each other over the odd choice of food.
This was the beginning of a revolution in our house. The idea of trying something "out of the question" started changing. One night we just happened to have fish sticks in our freezer and pudding in the pantry. I prepared it with the same thoughts of insanity going through my head that must have been going through Amelia's.
To everyone's surprise it actually didn't taste that bad! I mean, it isn't going to be my "go-to" meal, but it was fun to try something new. Soon after we started trying other "new and weird" food that was "unthinkable". To my relief and grateful heart our family is eating a larger variety of foods.
THANK YOU PINTEREST!
Ratatouille and Eggplant Parmesan... SUCCESS!!
I'm not saying that every family is going to have it that easy. And that making life changes are simple. Life is hard. Change is hard. Habits that we have are comfortable. No one wants to wake up and say "Today, I am going to change everything about my life, and I am going to LIKE IT!" Well, we might say that, but in reality..????
Take life one day at at time. Change one thing at a time. Self Reliance is worth it. Having that reassurance that there is food on the table no matter what... Is such an amazing feeling. So don't be afraid to try something new.
For the record... Tomatoes are still "unthinkable" to some in our family.
