Gardening Method
Build the Soil
No-Dig gardening methods involve building soil from the top down with layers of organic material instead of disturbing it by tilling. Key techniques include layering cardboard or newspaper to smother weeds, adding a thick layer of compost and other organic matter like straw or leaves, and then planting directly into the compost layer. This approach mimics nature, improves soil health and structure, and reduces weeds, soil erosion, and watering needs over time.

Smother the Weeds
Lay down a layer of cardboard or newspaper directly on the grass or bare soil where you want the garden bed to be. This will smother existing weeds and grass, creating a clean foundation for your new soil layers. Overlap the edges to prevent weeds from sneaking through.

Add Organic Matter
Cover the cardboard/newspaper with a thick layer (4 to 6 inches) of compost. You can add other organic materials like aged manure, leaves, or straw on top.

Plant your crops
You can plant directly into the compost layer. For larger seeds or root vegetables, you may need to create a hole in the compost with a trowel to place the seed or plant. You can firm the compost around the plant to help anchor its roots.
