Get Home Kit
This type of kit should be kept at your place of work, or in your vehicle. It is designed to only have the supplies you need to "get home". It is not the same as your "Vehicle Kit". A Backpack or suitcase on wheels will be very helpful as well.

Apparel
Comfortable walking shoes may be the most important item in this kit. Dress shoes would not be a good choice if you have very far to walk. Make sure you have a good pair of socks as well. If you frequently wear dress clothes to work, then a pair of jeans would be very helpful. Don't forget a facemask in case there are air pollutants.
Food & Water
To determine how much water to have you will need to know how far your are from home. If you are only one mile, then 1 disposable water bottle may be enough. But if you are several miles from home then plan for the extra weight of water in your kit. Protein bars may also be necessary depending on how far you have to travel.
Gear
If you are traveling more than a few miles a map may be very helpful. It can also show you helpful emergency locations such as a hospital or a medical clinic. Have a route already marked on the map to aid you on your way. A flashlight would be very helpful.
Plan
Your family needs to have a plan figured out ahead of time. Everyone needs to know what they will do in order to get home. What route will they take? Will they meet up with along the way? Who will pick up the kids from school? All of these need to be thought about and planned ahead of time. Make sure this plan is printed out and in the kit.
